Synopsis: As the first semi-final match prepares to start, Tenshinhan remarks to Jackie Chun that he's looking forward to seeing his tricks. Kuririn says there's no way Chun will lose to someone like Tenshinhan so Yamcha is sure to be avenged, but Goku isn't so srue, and again says that he thinks Tenshinhan is pretty strong, even suggesting that this match could go either way.
The fight starts, and Tenshinhan and Jackie Chun immediately begin a furious exchange of blows. Chun manages to grab Tenshinhan's leg and throw him away from him, but Tenshinhan leaps back in with a cross-armed die, forcing Chun to dodge into the air. Tenshinhan follows, leading to another exchange of blows before the pair land back in the ring. Chun leaps back into action, but rather than striking Tenshinhan directly, he creates a series of multiple zanzoken afterimages. Tenshinhan manages to see through them however, kicking the real Chun and sending him flying into the wall of the ring. Tenshinhan says that his three eyes can't be fooled, and Chun commends him for an impressive deduction, and says that he'll have to get serious after all. Chun removes his shirt and goes back into position, telling Tenshinhan to make the first move. Tenshinhan says he won't hold back just because his opponent is an old man, and asks Chun if he can even see the quick movements of his hands. Chun proves that he can however by grabbing those hands before they can strike him, and responds with a powerful knee strike to Tenshinhan's gut. Tenshinhan is staggered, and Chun presses the advantage, kicking Tenshinhan into the air. Kuririn cheers, but both Goku and Chun watch cautiously as Tenshinhan lands back in the ring. Infuriated, Tenshinhan rushes Chun and strikes him viciously with another kick and a punch, but Chun manages to land on his feet and strikes back with a punch of his own. As the two fighters separate, everyone watching is astounded by the ferocity on display in this fight. Tenshinhan thinks to himself how amazing it is for such an old man to be so strong, and wonders who Chun is and how he could be stronger than even Tsuru-sennin. Roshi is likewise amazed that Tenshinhan could take his attacks head-on and remain standing, and thinks to himself that the next generation coming up is truly an impressive one. Review: This chapter is once again one that I implore anyone who hasn't read it go do so for themselves, as anything I can say about the fighting and choreography is just going to pale in comparison to actually seeing it with your own eyes. Toriyama is very much coming into his own when it comes to showing off exciting fights by this point, and each one perfectly serves to get you excited at the prospect of seeing the next. As so many times before and so many times to come however, this once again leaves me with a bit of a quandary in that there's just not really much for me to add to this particular chapter just yet – much of it's story won't come up or be resolved until the following chapter, and pretty much all of it's techniques on display are things we've already seen before. I will say however that if Goku's dialogue wasn't already pulling it's weight to big Tenshinhan up, seeing him go toe-to-toe with Roshi in disguise, a Roshi that's already noted he's trained a bit in secret since the last tournament so as not to be left in the dust, does wonders to show how good of a fighter he truly is. It really makes Roshi's internal monologue about the next generation of fighters seem that much more intriguing as well...hmm... Until next time! Favorite Panel:
